2015 Volkswagen Golf Mk7 to Join U.S. VW Lineup

1979 vw rabbitThe Volkswagen Golf has an interesting history and probably an identity crisis, to say the least. We joke about the identity of the Golf because its name has changed so many times over the years. Originally, when the Golf debuted in the American market in the 1970s it bore the Rabbit nameplate. However, ten years following, Volkswagen decided to officially make the vehicle a Golf. This wasn’t the end of it, because in 2006 the brand had another change of heart and felt like the model was served better as the Rabbit and changed it back. Well, as you can guess by the current name of the vehicle was once again switched to Golf in 2010. The name seems to have stuck, because just last month Volkswagen announced that the Mk7 GTD would be reaching the North American shore in 2015.

Style of the Mk7

2015 Golf MK7

The Golf is a higher end, compact hatchback that is available in two or four door options. The previous GTD never made its way to the U.S. to much disappointment, so we were very excited to hear that the Mk7 would be coming to join us. The Mk7 maintains the sleek, classy style of Volkswagen and the model’s lineage. The new models will be offered with a Sport & Sound package that will contain more premium options such as 18-inch Nogaro Wheels, Clark tartan-clad sport seats and the heritage gold-ball manual shift knob.

What It’s Packing

2015 vw gtiOne of the most exciting factors about the Mk7 is that it will arrive equipped with a 2.0-liter Turbo diesel I4 engine that does more than pack a punch with 181 horsepower and 280 ft. lbs. of torque and reach 60 mph in just 7.4 seconds. Not too bad for a diesel. Also, operating in fourth or fifth gear and reaching speeds of 50 and 75 will now all happen a half-second quicker and speed can top out at a mighty 143 mph. Not to mention, the 13.2-gallon tank should be able to reach over 450 miles before refueling with mileage of 26 mpg city/ 35 mpg highway. Sleek and sporty, the Mk7 will not disappoint.
